“These young leaders embody the character traits that Dad valued, and we are honored to support their dreams for a college education,” says Kim Nuxhall, President and Board Chairman of The Nuxhall Foundation. “Dad would have loved everything about these young students because they are motivated, team-oriented, and character-driven.” The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship fund is managed by the Fairfield Community Foundation through its affiliate with the Hamilton Community Foundation.
"Facilitating the Joe Nuxhall Scholarship through the Fairfield Community Foundation is an honor," says John Guidugli, President and CEO of the Hamilton Community Foundation and its affiliates. "This scholarship holds immense significance for Butler County students and aligns seamlessly with our scholarship program. We look forward to a continued partnership with The Nuxhall Foundation and commend their dedication to recognizing student-athletes who exhibit outstanding character."
In order to be considered for the Scholarship, student-athletes from all Butler County High Schools, public and private, must complete an online scholarship application that includes an essay on character. Recipients are chosen through an exhaustive vetting and evaluation process facilitated by the Hamilton Community Foundation.
Now in its 39th year, the Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship was created in 1985 by The Ole Lefthander himself. Since its inception, the Scholarship has given more than $950,000 to college bond student-athletes in Joe’s home community. Each student receives a $1,000 - $2,000 scholarship paid to their school of choice.
“Dad knew how truly fortunate he was with all that was bestowed upon him, but in the back of his mind he always would have liked to have had a college education,” says Nuxhall. "This scholarship was extremely important to him, and we are honored to continue raising funds to ensure it lives on forever."
In addition to the Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship, the Nuxhall family recently created the Teddy Kremer Scholarship in honor of the beloved Cincinnati Reds batboy. The Scholarship was created for students studying Special Education. The 2024 recipient is Josephine Arno from Ross High School. Josephine will attend Miami University in the fall.

About the Fairfield Community Foundation: Established in 1999, the Fairfield Community Foundation was created by a group of dedicated Fairfield residents who wanted to support the Fairfield and Fairfield Township communities. In July 2022 Fairfield Community Foundation became an affiliate organization of the Hamilton Community Foundation. With assets of $6 million, FCF is growing in scope, reach and impact.
About The Nuxhall Foundation: The Nuxhall Foundation is the legacy foundation for former Major League Baseball pitcher and longtime Cincinnati Reds broadcaster, the late Joe Nuxhall. The Nuxhall Foundation carries forward three important legacy projects. A central project of The Nuxhall Foundation is The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields—an entirely accessible baseball and recreational facility where every player with every challenge gets every chance to play. Historically, nearly 300 athletes with physical and developmental disabilities aged 4 to 80 participate in programs at the Miracle League Fields. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship (in conjunction with the Fairfield Community Foundation) provides nearly $30,000 per year in scholarship money to student athletes at all 14 Butler County high schools. Very soon, the Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship will cross the million-dollar mark in scholarship money awarded. The Joe Nuxhall Character Education Fund pitches good character to young leaders throughout Greater Cincinnati by delivering and supporting programs that stress the importance of integrity, humility, respect, and kindness. In 2024, The Nuxhall Foundation will launch a $12 million capital campaign to construct The Hope Center, a year-round recreational facility for athletes with special needs that will help to create the world's most comprehensive athletic campus for individuals with disabilities.
